A Christian teenager has been arrested for ‘liking’ and sharing a photograph of a sacred Islamic building on Facebook.

Nabeel Masih 16, was charged and is currently imprisoned under the blasphemy law in the Kasur District for sharing a picture of Khana-e-Kaaba, a building at the heart of Islam’s most sacred mosque, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The complainant Akhtar Ali claims that he saw the post on Nabeel’s Facebook timeline and claimed that the picture had been posted in a “derogatory manner”, which would hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims.

While Nabeel remains in prison awaiting trial, Christians in the area say that they are fearful of violent reprisals – commonplace when local a Christian has been accused of blasphemy. Although there have been no reported attacks so far, tensions are high in the region. Nabeel’s family are currently in hiding, while some other Christians have fled.
