A Pakistani Christian man has allegedly been beaten to death in police custody.

The family of Amir Masih have demanded a prompt inquiry into this matter.

His post-mortem examination report of the gardener, who was in illegal police custody, suggests that he died on September 3 as a result of severe torture.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged by the victim’s brother in which states that Amir was summoned to North Cantt Police Station by Sub-Inspector Zeeshan on August 28th with other employees after a minor theft from his employer’s home.

Amir travelled to the police station of his own volition to give what he thought would be a quick statement to clear his name.

But after visiting the station he was taken to an undisclosed location where he was then tortured in an attempt to force a confession for an offence he did not commit.

In a statement to various media groups, Amir’s brother Sunny Masih, claimed that police officials had urinated on him while cursing him for being a Christian.

The report states that when family members reached the police station later the same day, they were told that Sub-inspector Zeeshan had called the victim, however they were unable to meet with either the sub-inspector or Amir.

On 2nd September Amir’s family rushed to collect him from the police station where he was handed to them by two unidentified police officers.

He was in a visibly poor physical state, semi-conscious and suffering from serious injuries.

The family took him to hospital in Lahore where he later died.

After an investigation was opened, a post-mortem which was released on 8th September concluded that Masih, was tortured to death by police, after having been charged with a minor crime.

It also confirmed his ribs had been broken.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has also taken notice of the incident and has ordered for the formation of a judicial commission and the removal of the District Police Officer.
