A Christian nurse was kidnapped on 2 October, forced to convert to Islam and marry a Muslim man against her will. Rebecca, a 22-year-old living in the Mariam colony in Sukkur, was reportedly kidnapped by armed men led by Mian Aslam, the son of Mian Mithoo, a member of the Pakistani parliament.

Mian Mithoo has a reputation for kidnapping non-Muslim girls and holding them hostage at his residence before forcing them to marry one of his disciples or servants.

Rebecca’s parents were threatened by Mian Aslam to stop them from reporting the crime to the authorities. Despite the threats, they attempted to lodge a FIR with the police but officers refused to file the case.

CLAAS UK Coordinator Nasir Saeed said: “It is unthinkable that a politician should be free to abduct girls and force them to convert and marry against their will. These are criminal actions that should be thoroughly investigated and punished accordingly. Police should be upholding justice, not aiding crime. And instead of sitting in Parliament making decisions on behalf of the Pakistani people, Mian Mithoo should be in jail.”
