In a society where talking about rape is still taboo and rape victims are treated with contempt, Ghulshan took the brave decision to stand up against social and cultural injustice and defy the will of her family by reporting what happened to her and seeking justice in the law courts.
The two men accused of the crime, one identified only as Ramzan and the other, Aman Ullah, were due to stand trial on 12 February.
Ramzan is currently free, after the high court in Lahore accepted his bail application. Ullah’s bail application has been rejected by the district and session court of Nankana, the high court in Lahore and the Supreme Court.
Gulshan, who lives in a CLAAS’ shelter home, continues to work on developing skills that will help her secure a better future. She is learning sewing and stitching so that she can become financially independent and is also learning to read the Bible in her native language.
