Christian man still fighting for freedom 10 years after being falsely accused of child abduction 24/02/2010

A Christian man left disabled after being tortured by police has been released on bail as he continues his long legal struggle against false accusations of kidnapping a child.

CLAAS has provided legal assistance to Masih since charges were first brought against him in 1999.  He suffered extreme torture at the hands of police, including being hung upside down until he fell unconscious and being severely beaten by officers. The torture left him unable to use both his arms.

The charges were brought against Emmanuel because he dared to stand up to a corrupt local police officer who was beating up his young son.  The campaign of terror raged against Emmanuel and his family forced them to abandon their home in Faisalabad and move to Lahore.

In 2008, however, Emmanuel’s bail application was rejected and he was instead arrested and sent immediately to the district jail in Faisalabad.

CLAAS petitioned the home secretary to grant Emmanuel bail on the grounds that he would not be able to survive in prison with his disabilities.

Bail was granted in November last year but the case continues.
