Christian couple handed 25-year prison sentence for blasphemy 09/03/2010
Ruqqiya Bibi and her husband Munir Masih have been sentenced to 25 years in prison for allegedly committing blasphemy. They were sentenced on 2 March by the court in Kasur and taken immediately to prison to begin their sentences.

A Christian man has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of committing blasphemy. Qamar David was sentenced on February 25. David has been held in prison in Karachi since his arrest in 2006 for allegedly sending blasphemous text messages "as revenge for attacks against churches by Muslims".

CLAAS has provided legal assistance to Masih since charges were first brought against him in 1999. He suffered extreme torture at the hands of police, including being hung upside down until he fell unconscious and being severely beaten by officers.The torture left him unable to use both his arms.

The husband and wife were accused of defiling the Koran by touching it with unwashed hands in December 2008, a crime which carries a life sentence.

Update on Shazia's case 11/02/2010On 10 February 2010, Naeem’s family including his wife Ghazala, sister in law Ruby Farooq and his son Hariss appeared in the court of Mr. Shafique-ul-Rehman Additional Sessions Judge Lahore for the confirmation of their bails as they are on pre-arrest.
