Legal aid for the poor

Through providing legal aid, practical support and shelter for the victims of persecution

In 2007 – 2008, thanks to financial support from partner organisations and donors, CLAAS Pakistan lawyers defended 65 cases against Christians in Pakistan’s courts.

Both fundraising appeals in Autumn 2007 and Spring 2008 were dedicated to raising support for the victims of persecution and abuse. The amounts donated were distributed by Mr Joseph Francis to families of struggling Christians on the run from their accusers.

Last year, CLAAS supported 20 individuals and their families as they sought to relocate in new areas after being accused of Blasphemy or other charges. Although many of these victims were found innocent by the courts they still felt they had to relocate fearing for their lives. It is not uncommon for fanatical Muslims to attack these innocent victims and even murder them.

CLAAS’ legal team is literally turning the tide on oppression by providing the legal assistance that can make sure the real victims, and not the criminals, enjoy the protection they deserve and are entitled to.  Part of this work consists of taking reports, petitions and statistics to law enforcement agencies, the DIG police, and senior government leaders and officials.  We also help persecution victims lodge criminal and civil complaints, compile evidence to help support cases, and supply victims with experienced lawyers.

In addition, CLAAS is actively campaigning to see changes to the law that will secure justice and equality for Pakistan’s minorities:
Blasphemy Law and other discriminatory laws are being used to intimidate, harass and persecute the Christian community in Pakistan. These laws have been used as an excuse for the destruction of churches, Christian institutions and attacks on homes and property owned by Christians. They are used as part of a sustained attempt to drive Christians out of Pakistan.

Our litigation efforts have led to hundreds of cases against minority citizens being dropped and lives saved each year.  Over and above legal assistance, we continue to extend our support to the provision of safe lodgings and  humanitarian aid for victims.
