“End the Abuse of the Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan” Campaign

FOR YOUR URGENT ATTENTION

Dear Supporters

We would like to bring to your attention the on going persecution of Christians in Pakistan because of the Blasphemy Laws. In just one month, three Christians Dr Robin Sardar, Danish Masih and Revd Frank John have been allegedly accused of blaspheming against the prophet Mohammad and of desecrating the holy Q’uran. Cases have been registered against them under section 295-C which has a mandatory death penalty.

Charges against Dr Robin have been brought by Rafique Mohammad who was not allowed to open a shoe stall in front of Dr Robin’s medical clinic. A large mob gathered in front of Dr Robin’s house but the police intervened, and Dr Sardar was rescued and remains detained in prison. . [For further information on this case and its development please click here

The Reverend Frank John used a speaker at a religious convention where he was teaching the Word of God and this became unacceptable to the local Muslim community, which resulted in blasphemy charges being brought against him. [For further information on this case and its developmentplease click here

Danish Masih who was being forced to embrace Islam by his co-workers as well as being assaulted by them. However, he somehow managed to escape as his co-workers conspired against him to set him alight, an activity which seems to be getting increasingly popular now-a-days in Pakistan. Recently the public set alight two thieves in Karachi. Danish is now safe but local Muslims are mounting pressure on the police to arrest him. Masih’s parents and close relatives have fled the area, however, the local Christian community now lives in fear since the Muslim community might turn on them instead. Although CLAAS has taken up these cases and is in constant communication with the victims and their families, we would like to request from you that you continue praying for the victims, their families and the CLAAS Legal Team. Please support our cause by raising your concerns and condemning the outrageous and outright disregard of human rights and the abuse of the infamous Blasphemy Laws with your local MP, MEP, the Pakistani Ambassador/High Commissioner and Prime Minister/President of Pakistan.

In your letters to them please request that the ongoing persecution of Christians and other religious minorities should be stopped and that the Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan should at least be amended to safeguard religious minorities of Pakistan.

Please find below ‘sample letter’ a rough guideline for your convenience, but please feel free to make any necessary amendments where you believe it may be necessary.

Thanking you in advance for your concern

Dear --------

I am very concerned about the recent blasphemy charges that have been brought against the 3 Christians under section 295-C.

The blasphemy law has been used to settle personal grudges like that of

·        Dr Robin Sardar who would not allow the accuser to set up a shoe stall in front of his clinic
·        The Reverend Frank John who used the loudspeaker in a religious convention and became ostracized by the local Muslim community
·        Danish Masih who refused to embrace Islam

This is an outrageous and alarming situation and the abuse of religious minorities because of this infamous law must be stopped. I believe this law must be changed and/or amended to ensure security, equal rights and religious freedom for religious minorities in Pakistan.

The Blasphemy law promotes religious intolerance and people are using it to settle their personal grudges. Several innocent people have been murdered, imprisoned, held in police custody, along with several churches and Christians having been attacked and set alight and yet no one has been charged for these various offences despite allegations having been proved false.
I believe that the Government of Pakistan must bring changes to the blasphemy law that are acceptable to the religious minorities, which will ensure equal rights, security and religious freedom.

Thanking you

Yours sincerely
